Well, the meeting later held successfully. PDP Governors and other leaders of the party ratified the recommendation of the Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi led party zoning committee which proposed that the North and the South should swap positions. That means that PDP members from the South will contest for the posts that members of the party from the North currently hold and vice versa. However, there was a reasons why the meeting did not witness any disagreement or crisis.

The major reason for that was because of a meeting Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and other PDP Governors held a night before the NEC meeting. According to a report by the Punch, the crucial meeting took place at the Rivers Government Lodge in Abuja on the night before the PDP NEC meeting. During the meeting, Wike and other PDP Governors reached a major agreement. The agreement was that the issue of zoning non-party (Executive and Legislative) positions should not be decided at the NEC. After they agreed on that, they also reached out to key party leaders especially those from the North to convince them to agree to that. They all agreed. That was why the issue was not raised or decided at the NEC meeting. That was why the meeting held smoothly without disagreements.

How this may later affect Wike and others from South
While the decision by Wike and PDP Governors might be seen as a wise one, it may later affect them in some ways especially those of them from the South. This is because key politicians from the North are still laying claim that they are entitled to contest for the PDP Presidential ticket ahead of 2023. This is despite the fact that PDP National Chairman post has been zoned to the region.

Again, the decision to evade discussing and deciding the issue is like postponing the rainy day. This is because the issue will still come up and it may not work in the interest of Wike and PDP Governors from the South who have pushed for the region to get the party's presidential ticket. This is because the North may even have an upper hand since someone from that region will be at the helm of the affairs of the party as the National Chairman.

Finally, PDP heavyweights from the North who seeking to contest for President may use use the decision Wike and others proposed against them. This is because it was their own idea that the issue should not be discussed and decided at the NEC when it matters. Already, some PDP heavyweights from the North such as former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and others are pushing for the PDP presidential ticket to be thrown open for all to contest for it.

The North may have an edge due to the decision not to discuss the issue as proposed by Wike and others. If it had been discussed, there may be opposing views, arguments and kicks, but at the end, it would still have been zoned to the South. This is because it would be in line with the swap since North produced the PDP candidate in 2019. Also, PDP tradition has it that the National Chairman and the presidential candidate cannot come from the same zone.
