Unemployment And Underemployment Statistics In Nigeria

Nigeria is the third country with the highest number of unemployed people as the country unemployment population increased to 33.3% in the fourth Quarter of 2020 from the 27.1% that it was in the second Quarter of 2020.

In the unemployment and underemployment report that the country National Bureau of Statistic just released, unemployment and underemployment in the country increased by 6.2% from Q2 to Q4 of 2020.


The unemployment rate among young people between the ages of 25 to 34 years has increased to 42.5% from the 34.9% that it was before in the second quarter Q2 of 2020.

If you are between the age of 25 and 64 years, you are among the economically active or working population and the number of people within this age group in the country increased with more than five million between June to December 2020.

If you are between 25 to 34 years, it means you are among the 28.8% of population who are willing and able to work, but don't have work. This group has the largest number.

Nigeria has almost 80,000 Ph.D graduates and out of this number, more than 12,400 are unemployed.

More than 6.2 million Nigerian men don't have work at all, while almost 6 million women are unemployed.

Imo state has the highest number of people who don't have work while Osun state has the lowest.

Benue state has the highest underemployment rate while Lagos state has the lowest.
