Godswill Akpabio, The Hero Hated By His Own People
The many stories written about the embattled Honorable Minister of Niger Delta Development Commission, Senator Godswill Akpabio does not come as a surprise to me, not the allegations, not the name callings and even the stories published by many people in his defense.
Godswill Akpabio did so many works as a governor in Akwa Ibom state that he was regarded the best governor in his time, he had so many developments which took place I his time, all projects leading to the now success and oil money making in the state.
Senator Godswill successfully built state of the art and international standard facilities in Akwa Ibom state, made the state a reliable place for comfort, rest, tourism and all of that. The stadium in Akwa Ibom, an international standard stadium where no facility needed in a stadium id missing, this he did within few years as the governor of the state.
He further moved to the senate after his many completed projects, successfully changing the view of the state and putting things in place that will continue to be a source of income to the state. the people voted him into the senate with no pressure, no struggle, not even a big or pronounced campaign. All this, owing to the success he recorded as the governor of the state.
In the senate, Godswill Akpabio started facing troubles, troubles from nowhere but his home, Akawa Ibom, the state he completely stabilized and made relevant to the country. It all started with the cumbersome amount of money he borrowed and made the state so much indebted to companies, individuals and organizations.
When there was too many trouble from his home state and even his then party, People’s Democratic Party, PDP, he defected and joined the ruling party, Al Progressive Congress, APC where he gained a little stability, although that too was short lived as his people refused him their vote under the APC.
He lost the senate elections in the 2019 general elections, making that a big pause on his political journey, but the ruling party however, through the president, Mohammadu Buhari honored him with an appointment, as the minister of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC. The position which he has handled for over a year plus now has become the talk of the nation, because pf the amount of money being spent already in such a short while.
Now, why I say that Senator Godswill Akpabio is a hero who is hated by his own people is that, he did well for the state in his time, borrowed money to put things in order, which he did perfectly and he was applauded for the job well-done. But as soon as he left, the people began to groan, the debt was much, he embezzled the money, he did this and he did that.
They instantly forgot that he is the same man they so much praised in the past, hailing and calling him all sorts of glorifying names. Why the sudden change? Now he has no backup nor supporter from his constituency nor his state, he is all left alone, to face the allegations, to go the long mile alone.
I believe Chief Godswill Obot Akpabio, just as he came out of the Akwa Ibom allegations, will comw out of this in praises, shamming his own people who are not in support of him.
