The main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has been boasting that it would take back Kaduna State in 2023 general elections.

The leadership of the party expressed this optimism despite losing the state to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, since 2015 when Mallam Nasir El-Rufai emerged the governor. Ever since, the PDP has been expressing its hope to take back the state. Other PDP leaders in the state have expressed this hope. But, APC has also been winning other elections held in the state until something happened recently as a rescheduled election was held in a LGA in Kaduna.

The PDP defeated the ruling APC to win Zongo-Kataf LGA election. According to a report by The Punch, the PDP candidate, France Sani, polled 28, 771 votes to beat the APC candidate, John Hassan, who got 19, 509 votes in the election. With that, the electoral umpire declared PDP winner of the election in the LGA in a state where Governor El-Rufai believes APC is totally in charge.

Could this mean PDP is gradually regaining strength?

It may mean many things. For PDP to win the election, it means that the party is more popular than the APC in some areas in the state. This is a political reality. No party can be totally acceptable in all the areas in a state. The result of the election also shows that the people were allowed to choose who would lead them in a relatively free and fair contest.

What it shows about PDP's strength in the state is that the party is regaining strength in some areas in the state. Winning the LGA in an APC controlled state is a morale booster to the main opposition party. After boasting that it would take back the state which it lost in 2015 and 2019 governorship elections, PDP is now set to put up a serious fight against APC for the soul of Kaduna State in 2023.

Nobody should be neglected. After all, APC under El-Rufai has spent its period of honeymoon in power when people took anything that happens. The Governor has ruled the state for six years after all the major promises made ahead of 2015 elections. By now, the people would be in a better position to make a wise choice having witnessed the reigns of both PDP and APC in the state. Small elections are usually the test for bigger elections. APC needs to rise up because PDP is ready to fight to take over in 2023.
