Muhammadu Buhari was born in 1942, In Daura Katsina state to a Fulani family. He was raised by his mother Zulaihat after the death of his father Mallam Hardo Adamu and he is the 23rd child of his parents.

President Muhammadu Buhari attended Primary School in Daura and Mai'dua from 1953 to 1961 and later enrolled in the Nigerian military training college in 1962 at the age of 19.

Buhari married his first wife, Safinatu Yusuf in 1971 and they had five children together before he divorced her in 1988 and married his second/present wife, Aisha Halilu in 1989 who he also had five children with.

The first and former wife of Buhari died of diabetes in 2006 and the president also lost his son, Musa and his first daughter Zulaihat Junaid, who died of sickle cell anaemia 2 days after giving birth.

Buhari owns about 5 homes, 2 mud house, several farms, a ranch of 270 head of cattle, 25 sheep, variety of birds, shares from three firms, two cars, and two undeveloped plot of land.

President Buhari served as the military head of state of Nigeria between December 1983 to 1985 before he became the president of Nigeria in 2015 after three failed attempts in 2003, 2007 and 2011.
