Ekweremadu, Lawan And 7 Other Lawmakers Who Have Been In Office For More Than Sixteen Years

The beauty of being a Senator or a House of Representatives member is the security of tenure. This highly respected post in Nigeria is not restricted to a term or two-term limit. One can be a Senator for the rest of his or her life if no other politician from his constituency ever dares to challenge his candidature after every four years.

In Nigeria, there are some Senators and House of Representatives members who have been in office for more than sixteen years. These Senators and House of Representatives members are often seen repeatedly in the legislative chambers from year to year. This may be because their people love them or mainly because there is no one strong enough to challenge them because of their financial powers.

In this political writeup, we will be bringing to you, 9 lawmakers who have been in office for more than sixteen years (2003-2021).

1. Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan.

The current Senate President could be regarded as one of the landlords of the legislative chamber. Lawan started his legislative career in 1999 when Nigeria returned back to civilian rule. He however changed his position in 2007. Lawan moved from being a House of Representatives member to being a Senator that year. Today, Lawan is still in the house and currently occupying the seat of the number 3rd citizen in the country.

2. Senator Ali Ndume.

Senator Ali Ndume is another Nigerian lawmaker that has been in office for more than sixteen years. Ali Ndume became a Senator in the year 2003. Today, he is still a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

3. Senator James Manager.

James Manager who is often referred to as "Ibori's man" is another Senator that has enjoyed unwavering support from his constituency. The PDP, Senator representing Delta South constituency has been in office since 2003 till today.

4. Rep Leo Ogor

The lawmaker representing Isoko North/ Isoko South federal constituency has also remained in office since 2003 till date, unchallenged.

5. Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

Ike Ekweremadu is one Senator that is versed in legal matters. The lawyer turned-politician came into office in 2003 after serving as the Chairman of Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu state. The Senator representing Enugu West Senatorial District is still in office to date.

6. Senator John Owan Enoh.

This vibrant Senator has been in office since 2003 and is still very much active in the house. The Cross River State politician is still in office to date.

7. Yakubu Barde.

The PDP man representing Chikun/Kajuru federal constituency has been in office since 2003 till date.

8. Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda.

This is one Senator everyone refers to as "the landlord". The FCT Abuja Senator has been in office since 2003 to date.

9. Rep Femi Gbajabiamila.

Gbajabiamila is indeed a household name in the lower chamber. The current Speaker of the House of Representatives has been in office since 2003 to date. He represents Surulere federal constituency.
