2023: Northeast Takes A Step Ahead Of The Southeast Region As 2 Politicians Declare For Presidency

The race to the 2023 presidency is getting more interesting as some politicians from the interested regions have shown extra commitment to the course by announcing their intentions to contest for the Presidency.

Among the 6 geopolitical regions of the country which are the Northwest, Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, South-south, and North-central, 3 regions out of the 6 are yet to produce a democratically elected President since the return to democracy in 1999.

At the moment, the southeast, North-central, and Northeast are yet to produce a President and as it stands, the regions who have made the most agitation for the rotation of the office to their region are the southeast and northeast regions.

While the southeast has used so many tactics such as calling press conferences and issuing timelines, the northeast has taken it a notch further by actual politicking, consultating, and presenting candidates who will contest for the office.

Note that as of today, the south-east has not jointly decided on a candidate to present for the elections and no politician, apart from Prof Kingsley Moghalu has declared to contest for the presidency.

Just after the PDP NEC meeting which threw up the decision where the party's national chairman was zoned to the north, the duo of the Deputy National Chairman (North), ex-Senator Suleiman Nazif, and former Gombe Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo who are from the Northeast had expressed their interest in contesting for president.

This to an extent, has shown the seriousness of the politicians from the region and with the agitation of the Northcentral to produce the national chairman, the interests of the northeast politicians may swing the votes to them as they look all prepared for the task ahead.

On the other hand, the southeast is currently in crisis as the Anambra governor has accused his colleagues of causing crises in his state.

This and the wave of crises caused by the gunmen who have been alleged to be members of the proscribed IPOB may go ahead to be the Achilles heel in the region as far as the 2023 Presidency is concerned.

While the party awaits the final decision of the party on zoning, the regions agitating for the presidency are urged to get more intentional with their agitations by fielding candidates instead of demanding for the ticket on a platter of gold.
