One Key Reason APC May Reject Zoning Formula For 2023 Presidency

It is most likely that the All Progressives Congress won't bow to the pressure from the southern region that its ticket should be zoned to the southern region. There is one specific thing that the party would put into consideration and the main reason is discussed in this article.

The debate on zoning of ticket has caused lots of arguments. The two big zones (north and south). One of the meetings of the southern governors dealt with the issue. The governors from south said they wanted the 2023 presidency to be for their own region.

Whereas northern elders and leaders have not backed out. They also argued that northern politicians can't be intimidated to withdraw from the race. Specifically, a top senator from Nassarawa State, Mr. Abdullahi Adamu, said that zoning is unconstitutional. Hence, it shouldn't be a yardstick for the race.

The first reason that the All Progressives Congress would reject zoning formula is that the party won't want to offend powerful northern politicians, elders and leaders. The argument of the Northern Elders Forum would go a long way to change the perspective of the political party.

The leadership of the APC understands that the political party is fully rooted in north. The big states of Katsina, Kano, Borno, Kaduna are under the APC. And the Northern Elders Forum has talked in all honesty. It is therefore important for the All Progressives Congress to reject zoning formula and throw the race open for every interested politicians to grab. The party can't afford to lose the northern votes.

The APC knows that rather than zoning the ticket to a particular region, it is better to reject the idea on the ground that it is not constitutional and throw the race widely open. If the party allows every contender to jostle for the ticket, the northern leaders would be pleased and they will use their strength to win the ticket.
