Many Nigerians were surprised at the manner Adamu was removed. His removal came as a rude shock and in an embarrassing manner too because he did not see it coming at that time and he was even on a very important national assignment in Imo State when the news of his sack broke. Adamu had gone to Imo to inspect the correctional facility that was attacked by dare devil gunmen who also freed about 1,800 prison inmates. Adamu had also ordered the Imo police to use maximum force on such gunmen to ensure that such incident does not occur again.
But, little did Adamu know that he just gave his last order as the IGP as he has been sacked over there in Abuja. This article brings you three things that if Ex-IGP Adamu had done on time, he would have escaped his sudden sack and that would have allowed him to complete his three months extension by President Buhari.
First, Adamu would not have been sacked that way if he had arrested Sunday Igboho.
For months, insiders have pointed out that the powers that be had mandated Adamu to arrest a popular Yoruba activist known as Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho. Igboho had given herdsmen vacation order and went on with his men to implement the order. Apart from that, Igboho recently declared a separate Yoruba Nation to be called Oduduwa Nation. But, Nigerian law forbids secession. Since then, moves intensified to arrest him but it never worked.
Adamu had sent letters to Igboho inviting him to the police headquarters but Igboho rejected the letters and never showed up. It was expected that Adamu should have used any means within his powers to get Igboho arrested but that did not happen as the Ex-IGP was battling with the dilemma of pleasing the powers that be and risking what may happen if Igboho is forcefully arrested which may spark serious crisis.
Second, Adamu failed to stop IPOB, ESN and other such agitations.
Adamu had served as IGP for over two years without bringing an end to the separatist activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra, (IPOB) led by Nnamdi Kanu. Although, Kanu is abroad, but it seems that instead of Adamu ending IPOB's activities, things are getting even worse as IPOB became more emboldened with the establishment of its armed military wing known as Eastern Security Network (ESN).
Adamu could not also stop the likes of Asari Dokuba who declared Biafra Customary Government by announcing its breakaway from Nigeria. That means Adamu failed to do the needful. That could have also led to his sack.
Third, Adamu would have escaped the sudden sack if he had restored peace in Ebonyi and other troubled states in Nigeria.
If Adamu had succeeded in restoring peace in Ebonyi State, Imo state and other troubled states in Nigeria, he would have escaped that sudden sack. But, things were simply getting worse by the day. Killings by killer herdsmen in Ebonyi were getting worse.
Kidnapping and acts of terror by armed bandits in some northern states like Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna among others were getting worse. Attacks on security agents and key security formations in South East were getting messier as the days go by.
The truth is that Adamu would have saved his job if he had brought all these under control. But, since Adamu could not solve these problems over the years as the IGP, he still failed to solve them in two months out of the three months extension he got. Adamu would not do any magic overnight to solve these problem if he is left to complete the remaining one month. So, his sack was the way to go as deemed fit by the powers that be. Will the new IGP Alkali Baba impress the powers that be by solving these problems?
