The history of Oyo State cannot be complete without the mention of great leaders who have ruled its affairs in time past. Oyo State is one of the Yoruba speaking states in Nigeria and it is also located in the western part of Nigeria. Below are governors who have ruled Oyo State from 1990 to date.
Abdulkareem Adisa was appointed as military governor of Oyo State in August 1990 and he held this position until January 1992 when he left office. He also served in the capacity of Major General during the administration of General Ibrahim Babangida.
Chief Kolapo Olawuyi Ishola took over from general Abdulkareem Adisa as governor of Oyo State in 1992 under the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He left office in November 1993 and died in 2011 at the age of 77.
Adetoye Oyetola Sode who is a retired Rear Admiral of the Nigerian Navy was appointed as Military Administrator of Oyo State in December 1993 and he held this position until September 1994 when he handed over.
CHINYERE IKE NWOSU
General Ike Nwosu became the governor of Oyo State in September 1994. He left Office in August 1996.
Colonel Ahmed Usman was appointed as Military Administrator of Oyo State in August 1996 and he ruled until August 1998 under General Sani Abacha's military regime.
PRINCE AMEN OYAKHIRE
Prince Amen Edore Oyakhire is a politician who served in different capacities during his time in office. Apart from being a military administrator of Taraba State, he was also made administrator of Oyo State in September 1998. He handed over power to governor Lamidi Ona-olapo in May 1999.
LAMIDI ONA-OLAPO ADESINA
Lamidi Ona-Olapo Adesina was democratically elected as governor of Oyo State in 1999 after which he was sworn in on the 29th of May 1999. He contested and won under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) party. He died in 2012 at the age of 73.
RASHIDI ADEWOLU LADOJA
Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja became the governor of Oyo State in May 2003 while contesting under the People's Democratic Party (PDP). He was impeached from office in January 2006 but was later reinstated in December 2006 after which he served until May 2007.
Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala is an Ex-police officer who also became the Governor of Oyo State from January 2006 to December 2006. This was during the impeachment of governor Rashidi Ladoja. However, Governor Christopher continued his governorship in May 2007 and he held this position until May 2011.
ISIAKA ABIOLA AJIMOBI
Isiaka Abiola Adeyemi Ajimobi contested and won as governor of Oyo State in April 2011 after which he was sworn in on the 29th of May, 2011. After a term of four years, he was re-elected for a second term in office. This was after he previously contested for the same position and lost to his competitors. He handed over power to governor Makinde after a tenure of 8 years in office. He died in June 2020 after he was confirmed to have contacted COVID-19.
Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde is the current governor of Oyo State. He was democratically elected in May 2019 and he still serves in this capacity to date. Asides from politics, he is also an Entrepreneur.
