One of the biggest challenges facing Nigeria is the incessant farmers-herders clashes. It appears the federal government has run out of ideas on how to tackle the situation. But some would argue the government has approached the matter with surreal laxity.
In recent times, many parts of the southern Nigeria, particularly the South West, have been clamoring for an end to banditry inflicted on the zone by some mischievous fulani herdsmen. Unsatisfied with the inaction of the government, they have taken laws into their hands to secure their zone. This eventually led to what is tagged ethnic cleansing that took place in a small part of Ogun state.
Today, a Nigerian senator representing Osun East Senatorial District, Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi has revealed that the current problem ravaging the South West is incessant because the Obas are behind it. According to Daily Post, the Senator was speaking to the journalists when opined that the Obas connive with some foreign Fulanis to wreak havoc in the society.
“What is ravaging the South West now; they are not the Hausa/Fulani people from Nigeria; not the Fulani who have been living with us for the past 100 years. They have not been killing people,” Sen. Fadahunsi told the journalists.
The senator stated the foreign Fulanis came with the idea of rearing cow only to turn against the culture and start causing mayhem in the region.
“If a stranger comes to your house, there is a norm, culture. Since the stranger cannot abide by your culture, he becomes an intruder, which is a criminal offence. In the whole Southwest today, you cannot do what these animals are doing in the bush."
The Senator went ahead to narrate how his assumption was proved to be true. It became clearer to him that the traditional rulers are the cause of the people's plights.
“I confronted this problem long ago when this thing was rampant in my area, I summoned the Obas in Ijesha land in my constituency. There were about four or five cases of kidnapping and they were begging Fulani with N2 million and anybody who could not pay, they will waste the man. So, I boycotted the protocol and summoned the Obas because I knew it was the Obas that encouraged them in their domains."
"We then had an agreement in a closed-door meeting; if we hear anything, automatically I will use the youth to chase the Oba away."
He alleged that the miscreant Obas employ the Fulani herdsmen as herbalists only to divert into using them to oppress the people.
"We even got one or two Obas’ children that were buying food for them and their victims. It was one of them that took us to 84 tents where they were in our area. We had to route them out. They are not the Hausa/Fulani that were living with us. When we asked them they said they don’t know them,” the senator concluded.
This shows that the real cause of the problem facing Southwest is rooted to their leadership. All hands must be on deck to eradicate banditry in ever region of the country, not just South West.
