The Punch Newspaper reported that Mr. Atiku Abubakar and his colleague from Kwara State, Mr. Bukola Saraki have sternly opposed the choice of Mr. David Mark as the national chairman of the People's Democratic Party. The former senate president could actually do two things to outsmart the two stalwarts of the party ahead of the convention.
The newspaper gave the reason why the two top leaders of the opposition party stand against the choice of the former senate president. The paper revealed that Saraki believed that he might be schemed out of the race for the PDP ticket if the national chairman comes from north centre. Both Mark and Saraki are from north central geopolitical zone.
On the other hand, the former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar considered Mr. David Mark as a strict politician. Recall that Mark led the Senate for eight years and there was no internal issues during his leadership of the house. Atiku may still be nursing some ambition.
The first thing that David Mark can take is to mobilise his staunch loyalists and supporters with whom he had worked in the past. He can still boast of some top senators who were with him when he led the house. Mr. Ike Ekweremadu is still in the house and he can help David Mark to get enough support from the PDP senators.
Likewise Mark can easily approach Mr. Goodluck Jonathan. Throughout the administration of Jonathan, the former senate president didn't give any tough time to the former president. Hence, Mark should meet the former president of the country if truly he wants to lead the PDP.
In the southern region, Mr. Mark should consult the Rivers State governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike. The governor would know how to convince or talk to the southern PDP governors so as to clear the way for Mr. David Mark, a possible candidate for the job.
The second step that he needs to take is to have a frank meeting with Mr. Aminu Tambuwal. The Sokoto State governor is the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum. And he can help to push the candidacy of Mark through the ranks and files of the PDP.
Mr. Atiku Abubakar and Bukola Saraki may want the national chairman to come from northwest in order to stop Aminu Tambuwal. But if the Sokoto State governor wants to win the presidential ticket, he can support Mr. David Mark. By doing that, Mr. Bukola Saraki would be out of the way.
So, Mark should liaise with the Sokoto State governor. Luckily enough, the northwest zone has seven states. Mark would get an edge and he can outsmart Atiku and Saraki if he works with Aminu Tambuwal ahead of the PDP convention.
