The Imo State Governorship position is one that its occupant by the incumbent Governor of the state, Senator Hope Uzodinma is marred with controversy. His victory at the Supreme Court from a distant 4th position, and with votes exceeding the registered number of voters for the election has arguably continued to ridicule the Apex Court. Till today, many are yet to understand the magic that made him to be declared winner of the March 2019 Imo State Governorship election.
Although the judgement was delivered over a year ago, but the dust it raised is yet to settle. It can be recalled that following the judgment, Chief Phillip Umeadi approved the Apex court, seeking for the enforcement of an earlier judgment of the same Supreme Court, where the Court ruled in December 2019, that Uche Nwosu is the duly nominated candidate of the APC for the Imo State Governorship election, and not Hope Uzodinma. With this, many have been wondering how the same Supreme Court declared the same Hope Uzodinma the winner of an election in which his candidature was nullified by the judgement that declared Uche Nwosu winner of the APC primaries.
While many have been looking forward to see how the Supreme Court will handle the Chief Phillip Umeadi (SAN) suit seeking for thr enforcement of the judgment on APC primaries, the Apex Court has rather remained silent. It can be recalled that the Apex Court had earlier scheduled the suit for hearing on the 11th of January, but failed to call-up the suit on that day, with no explanation given, nor new date fixed. With this, many have come to believe that there could be forces working against the suit to ensure that it does not see the light of the day. However, just like pregnancy cannot be covered with hands, it is my opinion that the suit cannot be ignored forever.
No matter how long it may take, Emeka Ihedioha could still be returned as the real winner of the March 2019 Imo State Governorship election based on the fact that the Supreme Court on its own, declared Uche Nwosu and not Hope Uzodinma winner of the APC primaries. On the other hand, the same Supreme Court disqualified Uche Nwosu and by its implications, APC for having the nomination of both the APC and AA. With this, it is no doubt that all votes scored by APC are invalid since the party and its candidate is disqualified, leaving PDP and Ihedioha as the authentic winner of the March 2019 Imo State Governorship election. Therefore, no matter how long it may take to hear the suit, Emeka Ihedioha may be returned as the Executive Governor of Imo State.
