Nigeria, South Africa Strive to Reconcile Relations
President Buhari
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed optimism that improving relations between Nigeria and South Africa will accelerate efforts to develop the continent.
He was speaking during a meeting with South African ruling ANC leader and South African Minister of Natural Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe, who visited Abuja on Friday.
In December, as his special envoy, President Buhari mentioned his recent visit to South Africa, when he and President Cyril Ramaphosa discussed ways to resolve the crisis between the two countries.
It simply came to our notice then. I went to South Africa and we talked about resolving the issue, that's what the Nigerian president told the envoy.
The president instructed Nigerian Oil Minister Timipre Sylva to work with his South African counterpart to get back to him.
The South African minister, who delivered a letter from President Ramaphosa, said the relationship between Nigeria and his country was important for the development of the continent.
Emphasizing that the two countries should work as allies, Mantashe said it was the relationship that would determine Africa's future.
