Profile of Mallam Ismaila Isa Funtua, an influential media leader and national patron. The Manchester University-trained administrator was very close to the president.

Family: Mallam Isa is related to the Waziri(Prime Minister) of Katsina Emirate. President Muhammadu Buhari's daughter, Safinatu, is married to his son, Abubakar Funtua. 


Education: He was the first set of students at the Kaduna Training College. He then sought more knowledge at the Institute of Administration, Ado Bayero University ABU Zaria, before traveling to the United Kingdom to further at the University of Manchester. 


Past Jobs: Administrative Officer at The Kaduna Native Authority, Minister of Water Resources of the second Republic, Monitor General at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kiru. He was also the Personnel Manager of Nigerian Textile Company and President of Late Chief MKO's Newspaper, NPAN and Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Lagos chapter. 


Businesses: Bulet International Nigeria Limited ( the largest only Nigerian owned construction company in the country). It built most of the essential government projects in Abuja. Founding Managing Director of New African Holdings.

Notable Contributions: Funtua was a strong advocate for freedom of speech, which almost got him killed on various occasions during the General Sabi Abacha regime. He was number 11 on the hit list of the fierce general. He was forced into hiding at intervals. The former patron was also one of the pioneer advocators for the presidency's zoning across all the country to ensure fairness and equality.


Cause of death: The former Minister of Water Resources died during a check-up at a medical facility in Abuja. The end was linked to a heart attack.


The presidency released a statement to mourn with the family and console the well wishes. May his gentle soul rest in peace.
