It is at that National convention that a new National Chairman of the APC who will replace Comrade Adams Oshiomhole will be elected alongside other party executives. It will be recalled that since the dissolution of the Oshiomhole led National Working Committee (NWC), no substantive National Chairman and other party executives have been elected. Instead, the APC has a Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention planning committee headed by Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State who has been leading the party. So, that convention is very important to APC and it’s members across the country.

One of those hoping to be elected to replace Oshiomhole in substantive capacity is a former Governor of Zamfara State, AbdulAziz Yari. However, there are two major problems that may make Yari to lose the election unless he goes back to sort things out before the election. This article discusses those two problems that can make Yari lose the contest.
Yari stood against his state Governor.
Yari is currently having a superiority clash with Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara. The major problem is who becomes the APC leader in the state. After Matawalle was announced the leader of the APC following his defection to the party, Yari rejected that. Yari insisted that Matawalle is not his leader and the issue has been causing division within the ranks of the APC in the state.

Based on this, Matawalle and the major APC camps that he leads are most likely not to back Yari to emerge as the National Chairman of the party. This can make Yari to lose if he cannot get the backing of his Governor and win majority of the votes from his home state.

Yari disobeyed the directive of APC National leadership.
It was the Chairman of APC Caretaker Committee (Buni) that declared Matawalle the leader of the APC in Zamfara. Buni made that announcement during Matawalle’s official defection from People Democratic Party, PDP, to APC. Buni also announced that all the factions in APC and their officials have been dissolved. There was even a report by The Punch on how APC snubbed Yari and still insist that Matawalle is the party leaders. But, Yari kicked against Matawalle being the APC leader in Zamfara. He did not stop at rejecting Matawalle as the leader, he opposed the dissolution of the other camps as announced by Buni.

In view of the above, APC may decide to disqualify him if things continue to get worse based on the fact that he refused to adhere to the directive by Buni. Another thing that may make Yari to lose if he is not disqualified is if the APC hierarchy decides to heavily back another person to defeat Yari and others. The ways to avoid these issues are: Yari should accept APC’s decisions and settle all the outstanding issues before the election.
