The investigation panel former EFCC Chairman Mr. Ibrahim Magu is facing is getting interesting by the day. He has been in the detention for 10 days now although he was released yesterday. This means that he will be appearing before the panel from his official residence. The allegations levelled against Magu is so weighty that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari cannot overlook it.
Magu was appointed in November 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari to head the Anti- corruption agency in Nigeria. From 2015 to 2020 he was in charge of the EFCC where he was able to prosecute some corrupt politicians and public office holders in Nigeria. Magu recovered alot of money including properties from suspected looters. One of his high point was the huge amount of money recovered from the former Group Managing Director of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC Andrew Yakubu. But a sad development came up on Monday last when the Department of State of Services arrested him in Wuse II Abuja office of the EFCC. The Presidential Probe Panel has been investigating him for the last 10 days. Alot of statements have been made by Magu which showed that allegations against him are serious and should be dug into. Yesterday President Muhammadu Buhari through the Attorney General of the Federal Abubakar Malami ordered the suspension of 12 Director in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC this includes the Secretary of the Anti-corruption commission Mr. Olukayode Olanipekun. This is to ensure that nobody directly or indirectly hinders the investigation been carried out by the Presidential Probe Panel. To me President Muhammadu has again proved that he is incorruptible, disciplined and that he frowns at corruption no matter whose ox is gord. The Presidential Probe Panel headed by Ayo Isa Salami will now have all the freedom to carry out investigation on the EFCC from one office to another to uncover what Magu and his boys have done in the last 5 years. Nigerians should be grateful to President Muhammadu Buhari for insisting that anybody found wanting in this government will face the law. Nigeria has been soaked in corruption and the allegations against the man whom President Muhammadu Buhari trusted to fight corruption is the height of it. Magu's ordeal began when the Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami wrote to the President asking him to remove Magu from office over alleged questinable activities. Few weeks after that request of Malami, the DSS whisked him. It was said that Magu had refused to make himself available before that panel. Although the DSS later made it clear that he wasn't arrested but invited. It could be recalled that Magu was accused of the following
Siphoning part of the money he recovered from looters
Insubordination to the office of Attorney General of the Federation which Abubakar Malami is in charge.
Sale of recovered properties to friends and EFCC officials at a give away price.
Maintaining different bank accounts including foreign bank accounts. President Muhammadu Buhari is leaving up to his promise not to tolerate any form of corruption in his government. Magu's ordeal will be a warning to every government official that President Buhari means the fight against corruption. Nigerians expect the Federal Government to charge Magu to court if the Presidential Panel headed by Justice Ayo Isa Salami founds him guilty.
