Opinion: Reasons Traditional Rulers Should Be Empowered To Take Charge Of Security In Their Towns

Emir of Muri, HRH Alh Abbas Njidda Tafida OFR, has sworn to eliminate armed herders, he has given them a 30 day quit notice. 30 days for all armed herders to leave Taraba forests. He said this in Hausa Language during the Eid-Al-Fitr celebration in his emirate. Watch video here. This generated massive reactions from Nigerians, they are saying traditional rulers should be in charge of security of a town under the support of the government. Below are some of the reasons they should be empowered to be in charge.

Many people have suggested that the solution to insecurity in Nigeria lies at the LGAs and States. Traditional Rulers are very powerful if empowered by the States. When Governors speaks, they speak without interest. You can feel the anger in this speech and can go offensive. That is why President Buhari asked a certain SW governor what happened to the local security committees headed by traditional rulers which should be coordinated by LG chairmen.

Some people must really think they are smart. Free the LG councils let them handle funds meant for them and coordinate security in their areas in collaboration with the traditional leaders and youths to fish out these criminals. Governors should endeavor to deploy security votes reasonably.

These bunch of unscrupulous armed gunmen are turning every bush in the North to their den for criminal activities and killing fields. Hardly does a single day pass without farmers being hacked to dead for venturing into their farmlands in the bushes of northern Nigeria without any remedy whatsoever from the authorities concern. Although, we have heard of numerous ultimatums been issued, the question is that, can they follow through with it?

When will State Governors and Traditional Leaders grow two set of balls to tackle insecurity in their States and LG? The insecurity situation in Nigeria is increasing daily that the FG can no longer protect everyone in this country, it's now left to State Governments to take action, but no balls at all. If we can pursue and repatriate Nnamdi Kanu back home from a diaspora country. If we can stop Sunday Igboho on his way to Germany and arrest him in Cotonou in Benin Republic, why on earth can't we arrest Kachalla Turji, Dogo Gide, Dankarami and other notable bandit leaders who are operating in Nigerian Territory?
