The region has never produced the national chairman of the PDP since the party was formed in 1998.
The PDP appeared to have zoned its national chairmanship to the South base on the recommendations of the zoning committee of the PDP which is yet to be formally announced by the NEC of the PDP.

Before now, he was working for the emergence of Eyitayo Jegede who was the candidate of the PDP in the 2020 Ondo guber election.
But it appears that he may have dumped Jegede to support Oyinlola to emerge as the next national chairman of the PDP. That will form the basis of our discussion on this article.
Why does it appear that Makinde may have dumped Jegede to support Oyinlola?

According to ThisDay newspaper, Makinde has toured the South-South in the last few days to ask the Governors in that region to support Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola to emerge as the next national chairman of the PDP. Take for instance, Makinde was in Portharcourt to see Governor Wike who is a major financier of the PDP.
He also visited Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State and Governor Obaseki of Edo State.
One may wonder why Makinde dumped Jegede to back Oyinlola a few weeks to the national convention of the PDP.
My understanding is that Makinde has realised that Oyinlola is gathering momentum because the forum of former PDP Governors is backing him. Also, some PDP members are pushing for the emergence of a national chairman who can win new members for the PDP.

Recall that Oyinlola led the group of aggrieved APC members before the 2019 presidential election.
He has such capacity and Makinde who is much interested in the emergence of the PDP national chairman from the South-West has no choice but to work for his victory.
