Defection has become a usual act in the Nigerian political scene. In fact, it is nearly impossible to talk about loyalty as far as Nigerian politics is concerned.
You would recall that the former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani Kayode, defected to the All Progressive Congress some weeks ago. That defection proves to us the loyalty of Nigerian politicians can't be validated.
Femi Fani Kayode is definitely not a "power force" in the Nigerian political scene. He is not in a good position to influence the decisions of Nigerians ahead of the 2023 general election.
On this note, I believe there are two politicians currently trading with the People's Democratic Party that might redeem APC's glory if they defect.
I think former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and his former aide, Reno Omokri, stand a good chance to change APC's narrative.
If this pulls through, it would be the most shocking defections in the history of Nigerian politics.
Reno Omokri vowed not to defect to APC at any point in the future
Reno Omokri made it clear that he will never defect to APC even if his "boss", Jonathan, makes such decision.
Reno Omokri pointed out that he is different from Femi Fani Kayode and he is ready to prove that to Nigerians. However, this is politics and we can't rule out any future possibility.
Three reasons why Reno Omokri and Jonathan could redeem APC's glory in 2023 if they defect from PDP
There are three major reasons why I think Reno Omokri and Jonathan are in a good position to redeem APC's lost glory:
1. Zoning presidency: Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, it is possible that political parties in Nigeria would adopt zoning. If this happens, Jonathan remains the only Southerner who can pull votes from every region of the country.
2. Recognition: Having ruled the country for about 6years, Jonathan is well recognised in every region of the country. Every political party would want an individual with a "famous face" to be the flag-bearer of their party.
3. Integrity and Acceptability: Reno Omokri and Jonathan are politicians of great integrity. I don't see any reason why Northerners wouldn't embrace Jonathan if he wants to become the president of Nigeria in 2023.
