Politicians are already getting ready for the 2023 general elections with a great emphasis on the presidential contest.

Although, the year 2023 is about two years ahead, but politicians understand that there is the need to start getting ready as early as possible. Remember, for a politician to be a candidate of any political party, the person must win the primary first. For the person to be accepted as the candidate to win the primary, such person must have what it takes such as popularity, political clout, financial war chest, political network, experience among other things.

Now, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP is scheming on how to wrestle power from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. In fact, PDP may succeed if the party members play their card well. This is because many Nigerians are already disappointed with the APC due to their poor performance since taking over power. Things nosedived from bad to worst with the APC appearing not to have any solution to offer.

Part of playing their card well in order for them to defeat APC is for the PDP members to choose strong candidates that will be acceptable to majority of Nigerians. That will give the PDP the major boost ahead of the election. 

Who are the people PDP can present as candidates that can help the party to win APC?

Any other better presidential candidate(s) will be good. So long as the person(s) is better and may be younger with the required skills, knowledge, experience among others. But based on on experience and what happened in 2019 presidential election, choosing Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the PDP presidential candidate will be a good choice.

The Former Vice President did very well in 2019 presidential election. To many Nigerians, Atiku was their winner but the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, told Nigerians that Muhammadu Buhari of APC won the election. The courts upheld it. That is it. Buhari is now the President. 

However, Atiku and his running mate then, Peter Obi, did very well. If Atiku and Peter Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State did that well back then in 2019, then things can be better in 2023. A joint ticket of Atiku and Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State may send the APC packing from the Aso Rock Villa. Wike is another big fish in the PDP and in Nigerian politics too. He has held many positions at party, local government, state and federal levels respectively. Wike did well and everybody knows that Wike is a man who backs words with action. 

Wike proved a point to the APC in September 2020 when he led the PDP campaign team to help Governor Godwin Obaseki to win a second term in Edo State election. That was a big shocker to the godfathers, to the then former APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole and the whole APC.

That was not the first time Wike proved APC wrong to score strong political point. They say that charity begins at home, Wike started at his home in Rivers when he defeated Rotimi Amaechi's candidate, Dakuku Peterside in 2015. He still won again in 2029 against Amaechi's wish. With these feats that he achieved, Wike restored Rivers State back to the full control of PDP. Wike still helped the party to take over the whole of the oil-rich South South region. 

Atiku's achievements are there too for people to see. His achievements in the North and in Nigeria are in the public domain. Atiku is a performer. Moreover, Atiku and Wike have all it takes to defeat APC and rule Nigeria. If PDP give them the joint ticket, then the party may succeed in taking over power from the APC that has failed in delivering on its campaign promises thereby leaving Nigerians disillusioned. Many Nigerians are ready to give another party the chance. PDP may be lucky again because many Nigerians still believe that life was better under PDP than now that APC is in power.
