As the 2023 presidential election gets closer day after day, the different political parties have begun playing their own political games to emerge as the winner of the election. It will be of note that there has been a clamour by many people that the next president of Nigeria should emerge from the Southern part of the country, a motion which none of the popular parties has concluded upon.
However, the national executive committee of the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of recently approved the recommendation of the committee which zoned the position of the party national chairman to the north while throwing open the opposition of the president to all the zones.
This decision by the PDP committee seems like a way of playing smart moves on the APC to know which region will be picked as their flagbearer before openly announcing which zone will clinch the PDP presidential ticket.
What the PDP likely did was hide their zoning arrangements from the APC so that they would not be exploited. Meanwhile, the north has got its position, which is the National Chairman. Indirectly, the Presidency has been zoned to the south, but they only try to conceal it from the APC and also to calm pressure from party members who may take offence. There is no way the North will get both the national chairman position and the presidency. This might cause crises in the party, especially considering the consistent clamour for zoning that has been going on by the southerners for months.
Do you think the APC could fall for these simple tricks? Do you think PDP would still stand if the ticket was also truly thrown open to all and was clinched by a northerner, making both the chairman and president be in the same region? Share your view.
