How 4 South East Political Leaders Voted Against Igbo Presidency During PDP Zoning Committee Meeting

The chance of the Peoples Democratic Party zoning its presidential ticket in favour of the South East region appears to be very slim. And political leaders in the region may have themselves to blame for this outcome, due to the lack of unity in their camp.

The absence of harmony in the South-East caucus became evident last Thursday in Enugu when the PDP National Convention Committee on Zoning met to adopt a zoning formula for the new PDP National Working Committee positions, including party chairmanship.

This article will analyse how the lack of unity in the Igbo camp may have ruined the chance of the Igbo presidency in 2023.

Out of eight South-East members in the zoning Committee, four voted in support of the North

The zoning committee which is led by Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Uguanyi has eight members each representing the six zones in the country.

The most important decision for the committee is to decide which zone gets the party chairmanship. This is important because if the chairmanship is zoned to the south, it means the presidency goes North and vice-versa.

According to a report in Thisday Newspaper, this has triggered an intense battle between the North and South East. All three zones in the North stand united that the chairmanship should go to the South. They have been supported by South West.

Meanwhile, in the camp of the South East, there is a heavy cloud of division. Out of the eight members from the South East, four are pushing for the party chairmanship office to be zoned to the North, so that the South can have the presidency. But four other Igbos leaders disagree. They have sided with the North to insist that the PDP chairmanship office be ceded to the South.

Those leading the charge for the party chairman to come from the North are former Senate President Ayim Pius Ayim, former Aviation Minister, Osita Chidoka and two others. They stand strong on their belief that 2023 should be the turn of the South East. But their resolve has been weakened by the other four delegates.

Meanwhile, the reason why the South West aligns with the position of the North is that the region has the interest to secure the office of the Chairman to itself. Leaders of the zone are very united on this.

Pretty much every other zone has an agreement on what they want to get from the zoning meeting except the South East. This could have a huge implication for the region because it might end up shortchanging itself in the politics of 2023.
