In one of the headlines yesterday, the Governor of Kaduna State, El-Rufai, said the Igbo people cannot insult everyone in Nigeria and demand the presidency. He said the region can only get the presidency if they ally with other regions. But how realistic is this statement made by the Governor?
Before I answer this question, I would like to clear the air on one particular statement the Governor also made. It is not everyone in the Southeast that is clamouring for secession. Nigerians should understand this. Nnamdi Kanu and his supporters feel that is the way out, but that is not what other people in the region think.
Coming back to the issue of alliances, I don't think that would be the solution to the Igbo presidency. No amount of alliance will make an Igbo man become Nigerian president.
The Igbo people have been very loyal to PDP, yet they have not been allowed to run for presidency under the party. They always end up losing. They lose because they don't have the numbers. And this is just at the party level.
It was much easier for Jonathan because the North was somehow divided then. We had the ANPP and CPC back in 2010. In 2014, these parties came together under one name APC. That alone led to the downfall of Goodluck Jonathan.
APC and PDP are more like a game now. Even if an Igbo man contest under one of the above parties, he would still not win. Once the other party picks a Northerner, that would be all. Even if the Igbo people get the presidency now, it might take another 50 years for them to get it again.
Here is the only solution to this matter. The presidency should be rotated among the regions. The Western way of running politics is not working for us. The language we understand in Africa is "turn by turn". The presidency, the Vice President, Senate President, Speaker and Chief Justice should be rotated among the regions.
