Nigerians can still remember that former National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Adams Oshiomhole eventually reached out and apologized to Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State.
Oshiomhole through the same letter congratulated Obaseki on his victory at the Supreme Court which has sealed his emergence as Governor of Edo State for the second term in office. Oshiomhole referred to the events that took place before, during and after the Edo governorship election where he worked against Obaseki. He begged Obaseki to put the whole thing behind and see him as his brother from a different mother. Oshiomhole went further to remind Obaseki that they have come a long way over the years and there are some issues that should not affect the good relationship they have built for many years.
Obaseki only complained that the letter was not addressed to him personally but posted on the internet and social media. The Governor also complained that Oshiomhole did not use his letterheaded paper to write the letter neither did he personally sign it. Those were the only issues Obaseki complained about. He did not say that he would not accept Oshiomhole's apology or that he would not forgive his estranged godfather as he begged him to do. So expect that they may come back again to work together on some issues of mutual interest to them as politicians who have strong allies over the years. After in politics, there is no permanent enemy or permanent friend but only permanent interest.
One top political office Obaseki and Oshiomhoe may work together to produce who occupies it.
Without mincing words, Obaseki may work together with Oshiomhole to produce who becomes the next Governor of Edo State. Obaseki knows very well that Oshiomhole is very much interested in who emerges the next Governor of Edo State when the second term of the Governor elapses. As a former Governor who helped Obaseki to win the post after his own tenure, Oshiomhole interested in occupies that post. He and Obaseki would have reached some strong agreements bound by serious terms so that nobody will breach it. One of such agreements will be that Oshiomhole would have a good say in who succeeds Obaseki as next Edo Governor.
That could be one of the reasons Oshiomhole ate the humble pie by being the one to first reach out to Obaseki to apologize and congratulate him since the Governor has sealed his victory by winning at the Supreme Court. As a smart politician, Oshiomhole knew that the fight for this phase is over. So, the attention should be on the next phase of political deals in Edo.
Obaseki is most likely to forgive Oshiomhole and accept him as he had begged the Governor. Apart from that, Obaseki is also most likely to work with Oshiomhole in producing who occupies the post of Edo Governor when his second term ends. Some people will be asking, how can that be since Obaseki and Oshiomhole belong to different political parties?
Well, check what happened in Ogun State in 2019 when former Governor Gbenga Daniel resigned his membership of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to back Dapo Abiodun of APC to win due to a long standing agreement they had many years ago.
In Edo, either Obaseki or Oshiomhole may defect to the other party to realize the important political goal. Even if none of them chooses to defect, they could agree on the individual to back to become the next Governor. The party the person contests under may not be the main focus.
