William Alade Fawole, an international relations professor at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile Ife, chats with DARE ADEKANMBI about a variety of topics, including the 24th anniversary of Nigeria's civilian government, the foundation of democracy, and how to deepen it.
Which areas in particular should we concentrate on if we want to strengthen democracy in the nation?
Numerous tasks need to be completed. First and foremost, there needs to be a broad understanding among elites and the general populace that democracy is what is needed.
We should just accept whatever a legally established court decides. Chaos will result if you refuse to do that.
Democracy will not be strengthened by losing an election and taking to the streets in violent protest. Democracy will not be strengthened by standing in front of the Ministry of Defence and urging that the military take over because some people feel wronged. We have to understand that.
