When you lead others, the example you set is the most powerful way you convey to them what’s important. It’s not always easy to do the right thing, but it’s absolutely necessary if you expect the same from the people you lead as this award winning police officer 'Abba Kyari' knew so well.
Arguably the best and most successful police officer in the history of Nigeria. He was honoured by the House of Representatives for his exceptional services and uncommon gallantry in the Nigerian police force.
He goes by several sobriquets – Super Cop, Jack Bauer, The Sheriff, etc. Interestingly, he did not give himself any of the nicknames. Nigerians did – in recognition of what has come to be seen as his specialty in bursting crimes that seem to defy solutions.
Abba Kyari is just 44 and barely 20 years old in the Nigerian Police. But his name rings a bell perhaps louder than those of others that had been in the force longer than him and many ranks his superior. To Nigerians in different parts of the country, his name is sweet music whenever it is mentioned, but to those that live in the underworld, the name strikes fear.
Mr Kyari is the commander of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team.
One thing that i've learnt about Abba Kyari is that he possesses the four individual values that all military leaders are expected to possess. They are:
-Courage: overcoming fears of bodily harm and doing your duty (physical courage), and overcoming fears of other than bodily harm (moral courage) while doing what ought to be done
-Candor: is being frank, open, honest, and sincere with your soldiers, seniors and peers
-Competence: is proficiency in required professional knowledge, judgment, and skills
-Commitment: means the dedication to carry out all unit missions and to serve the values of the unit, Military, and the country.
Abba Kyari and his team became popular after the successful arrest of some notorious criminals across the country.
Notable amongst their successful arrests were that of notorious kidnap kingpins, Chukwudi Onwuamadike (also known as Evans) and Bala Hamisu (aka Wadume).
Others are killers of the late chief of defence staff, Alex Badeh, and kidnappers of President Muhammadu Buhari ADC’s father-in-law.
He is a caurageous officer who believes in T. Blauer's words "never let fear, pride or ego to dictate your next battle plan". In his many battles with the underworld, he looks at the tenacity, the will, and the indignation that propels his action against them. His hatred and onslaught against criminals and criminality is born out of his love for a peaceful world.
Like Lieutenant Colonel Arnaud Beltrame of France who exchanged himself for a hostage during a supermarket siege in southwest France and eventually paid the supreme prize, DCP Abba Kyari have severally laid his life on line that Nigeria will be safe.
