APC Govs. Okays 6 Months Maternity Leave

The All Progressive Congress (APC) governors under the platform of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) have approved six months maternity leave and mandatory six months breast feeding in favor of mothers across all the APC controlled states in Nigeria.

The endorsement was contained in a communiqué duly signed by the secretary to the state governments (SSG) of Jigawa and Plateau states, Adamu Fanini and Professor Danladi Atu, respectively.

In a virtual meeting participated by the officials, the secretaries to governments of APC States, emphasized that with respect to the importance of parental support needed for children right at birth, including the health of nursing parents, they recommend that the APC controlled states across the nation should pay great attention to the implementation of 180 days (six months) maternity leave for the women.

The group also encouraged the All Progressive Congress controlled states to map out a significant communication modality that will facilitate public awareness on issues of malnutrition and its effects on both children and mothers.

While noting the benefits inherent in good nutrition and the necessary synergy with sub-national authorities, the group indicated in their communiqué, a proposal for the secretariat to observe regular meetings with APC states commissioners of health, education and agriculture.

This, they said, is to foster sectoral work plans for the execution of the endorsed frameworks on the promotion of child nutrition in all the APC led states in Nigeria, as well as indicate their possible shortcomings and existing opportunities for actions to be taken.
