Covid-19 vaccine finally delivered to Nigeria

Covid-19 vaccine have been delivered to Nigeria under the World health organisation Covax programme. The Covax was designed to ensure vaccines are equitably shared and delivered especially to poor nations of the world. A total of almost four million doses was shipped from Serum institute of India and delivered to Nigeria on Tuesday.

This comes in the wake of exponential boom in cases, brought about by the second wave of infections within the country. In the past few weeks, Nigeria has recorded hundreds of new cases and increment in the number of deaths.

The WHO has earlier announced that the delivery will be in phases which could signify that Nigeria will get more doses in the future.

The federal government had earlier opened a registration porter for Nigerians to register for vaccination online. The federal ministry of health also announced that priority will be given to frontline workers, especially medical and health personnel. It should also be noted that the vaccine delivered to Nigeria is that of AstraZeneca/Oxford, experts have advised the federal government to purchase more vaccines especially from Russian Sputnik V or Chinese vaccines which are easy to store unlike their western counterpart.
