Popular Nigerian author Sam Omatseye claimed in a Facebook post that when Simon Lalong was requested to sign an empty piece of paper, he refused since he knew the fate of Plateau Safe depended on it. He claimed that Simon Lalong was aware of the repercussions of his decisions as the speaker of Plateau State and that he also had the best interests of the residents of Plateau State in mind.
He claimed it was unfair to require the speaker of an individual State's house of assembly to sign a blank piece of paper when the ramifications of his actions were obvious. However, Omatseye is adamant that Lalong's decision to request confirmation of his signature by himself rather than providing a sample was wise of Lalong.
I told you to look at this man, he said. I should sign a blank document, he advised. to what end? Ooo, I'm still the speaker of the House. For you, I'm signing a blank sheet of paper with the fate of the Plateau State? No, he replied, they needed to confirm a few paperwork. Bring those papers, I instructed. I would admit to signing if I am the one who did it. I would let you know if it was my signature if it were. On plain paper, however, I am unable to sign my sample signature. I'm not sure what you intend to do with the Plateau population.
