OPINION:Ubah's Revelation That He Would Get Result Of Anambra Election Before INEC Calls For Concern

The forthcoming governorship election in Anambra State is one of the major elections that many Nigerians are interested in.

Ahead of that crucial election on November 6, 2021, one of the governorship candidates made a surprising revelation. It was Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, the candidate of Young Progressive Party (YPP). According to a report by The Punch, Ubah revealed that he would get all the results of the Anambra election on that day even before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He gave further details on how he has planned to pull of that big feat. Well, for the discerning minds, Ubah's revelation calls for a serious concern for the following reasons.

For a start, it is a challenge to INEC. Ubah boasted that he would ensure that the result of the Anambra election is made public real time. What is the job of INEC again? Any way, Ubah has made this open challenge to INEC. He is just an individual and he has revealed that he has set up enough machinery across Anambra to make the results public real time. He even boasted that he has more than enough hands to do the job and make the result available to him even before INEC gets them. This is a big challenge that INEC and the federal government need to work on. If a private individual can do this this, it will be a slap on INEC and the Nigerian government if they cannot do the same or do better.

Also, Ubah's revelation calls for concern because conflicting figures may emerge from the election and affect its credibility. This area needs to be looked at because Ubah said that he is planning to cover and monitor the election real time with over 80,000 canvassers in just 5,000 stations in Anambra State. This is because he would like to stop any attempts or plots to rig the election. Who knows who is planning to rig the election and who is not planning to do so.

No doubt, while his intention appears noble, there are causes for alarm. Ubah would spend huge amount of money to make this happen. The fear is that he is going to believe the result his camp will churn out more than what INEC will officially announce. That will lead to the emergence of different results from the same election. This is why the authorities need to do something about this. In the event that it does not favour him, he will most likely reject the outcome and resort to legal battle.

Moreover, how will INEC be there and another private individual who is a candidate will be covering and revealing the election results real time? It is the sole duty of INEC to conduct, monitor, collate and announce results of elections in Nigeria. How will it end if a private individual who is also a candidate in the election does that? This may not end well. There is bound to be clash of figures from Ubah's camp and that of INEC.

This is because while Ubah may have some good intentions, he is still an interested party since he is a candidate in that election who hopes to win. If this were to be done by independent monitoring groups, that will be better. While Ubah is free to do things that will help him get justice, the way and scale he plans to do it may clash with INEC's official duties except if INEC permits it.
