Independence Day Speech: President Buhari Failed To Comment On 2 Vital Issues Affecting Nigerians - Babajide Says

Journalist and Researcher on Television Continental, Babajide Kolade-Otititoju, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari failed to comment on two vital issues affecting Nigerians and her citizens during his Friday, October 1, 2021, Independence Day speech.

President Muhammadu Buhari.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had delivered Independence Day speech in the country's capital to sixty-first of Nigeria's freedom from her British colonial masters on October 1st, 1960.

Babajide said that the 78-year-old number one citizen of the country did not address issues of high cost of food and high exchange rate of a dollar to naira, which currently stands at about ₦600 to a dollar.

Speaking on the popular social political programme tagged Journalists Hangout, on Friday, the revered journalist said the President laid much emphasis on the achievement of his administration but offered so little about the most pressing problems facing the country, and how those could be solved.

He disclosed that he was caught aback to notice that the President did not say anything over the rising cost of food in the country as well as the free fall of the naira impacting negatively on Nigerians.

The multi-award winning journalist maintained many Nigerians are starving because of the high cost of food in the market caused by rise in dollar to naira rate, and that this is, in doubt, has been worsening poverty in the country.

He, however, said that though the President talked about taking more Nigerians out of poverty in the next three years, he failed to give exact figure of how many Nigerians have become poor within current dispensation and how many have been lifted out of poverty under the current dispensation.

Babajide maintained that there is no way more Nigerians will not become poor as long as the price of items become skyrocketed.

Commenting on the dollar to naira rate, the ace journalist opined that the President must have been informed by his advisers about the current exchange rate figure, wondering why that had not been included in the President's Independence Day speech.

He added that the President must have also heard that Central Bank of Nigeria lampooned a Nigerian site(Aboki FX) that published foreign exchange rate, and made it look like once the site is dealt with, the naira would appreciate tremendously.

Babajide finally said that despite the fact that the owner of the foreign exchange site had stopped publishing foreign exchange rate, the naira continue to b on a free fall, adding that there is no way the President would not beware of this but has maintained a deafening silence on it.

What is your take on Babajide's reaction to President Buhari's 2021 Independence Day speech? Do you go with his sentiment, or you share a different view on this?
