PDP Crisis: Makinde's Ambition Could Make S'West Lose Top NWC Postion To Igbo Politician

The South-West caucus of the PDP is yet to put its house in order ahead of the National Convention of the PDP which will take place on October 30 and 31st.

Governor Seyi Makinde who is the only PDP Governor in the zone appears to be in control of PDP in the South-West and top PDP stakeholders in the zone are happy with it.

The South-West could have produced the National Secretary of the PDP but the inability of Makinde and Fayose to agree on a candidate made the South-East get such a position.

According to Sun newspaper, the South-West PDP is in crisis and it is all about the purported presidential ambition of Seyi Makinde and his plan to back Igbo politician Rita Orji to clinch the position of the Deputy National Secretary which was zoned to South-West.

How is Makinde's presidential ambition causing crisis in the PDP?

Before now Makinde was working to ensure that the South-West produced the national chairman of the PDP. He supported Olagunsoye Oyinlola to emerge until the position was zoned to the North.

The permutation is that the South now has the chance to produce the presidential candidate of the PDP and Makinde appears to be interested.

The issue in South-West PDP is that Makinde wants political associates who will protect his interest to occupy key NWC positions zoned to the South-West.

That is why he is rooting for Rita Orji, a top Igbo politician who represented a federal constituency in Lagos to occupy the position of the Deputy National Secretary zoned to the South-West.

Many South-West PDP stakeholders are against it and have vowed to resist it because to them Orji is not from the South-West although she represented a federal constituency in Lagos at the House of Representatives.

Also, some PDP stakeholders in the South-West are not happy that Makinde is no longer in support of Oyinlola to emerge as the Deputy National Chairman of the PDP.

My understanding is that just like any other Southern PDP politician interested in the 2023 presidential race, Makinde wants to ensure that his loyalists occupy key NWC positions of the PDP zoned to South-West to keep his purported presidential ambition alive.
