Will Wike And Other Key Southerners Accept It As PDP Agreed That Northerners Can Vie For President?

Indication emerged that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, agreed that politicians from the North can still contest for the party's presidential ticket.

This was also confirmed in a report by The Punch following the emergence of former Senate President, Iyorchia Ayu, as the consensus northern candidate for PDP National Chairman. The issue is, will the southerners not kick against this any time soon ahead of the 2023 presidential election? This is because there may be a possibility that the North can produce both the National Chairman of PDP and its presidential candidate for 2023 presidential election if they are allowed to also vie for the presidential ticket.

How Wike, Makinde, Obaseki and others pushed for North to produce PDP Chairman for a major reason

It would be recalled that the moves for the South to get the PDP presidential ticket ahead of 2023 was led by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State, Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and others. According to an earlier report by The Punch, they planned and pushed harder to cede the post of PDP National Chairman to the North. Why? This is to pave way for the PDP presidential ticket to be given to the South.

They did this knowing fully well that based on existing PDP tradition, the same region (North or South) does not get the post of National Chairman of the party and still produce the presidential candidate. So, their plan was to make North to produce the National Chairman so that the South will get the presidential ticket. However, things seem not to be working out as planned. The latest development that PDP gave its nod for Northern politicians to still contest for the presidential ticket is a deal-breaker for Wike and his allies.

The big question now is, will Wike, Makinde, Obaseki and other key southern politicians accept the decision for Northerners to still contest for the presidential ticket after producing the National Chairman of PDP? This may be hard. But, Wike and his Southern colleagues may accept the decision in the interest of the party. They may also accept it if they see that the Southerners have higher chances of winning the presidential ticket even if it is thrown open for all to contest. After all, PDP controls more states in the South unlike in the North where the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC control many of the states.

Moreover, Wike and his colleagues may have some strong allies from the North who may back them to get the ticket since it may favour their individual ambitions more. On the contrary, Wike and his allies from the South who had pushed for South to get the ticket may turn around to kick against this new agreement that Northerners can contest for the ticket. The decision is theirs after checking which course of action is the best for them.
