When on 9th January, 2020, the governors of the Southwest geopolitical zone established a security outfit codenamed 'Amotekun', roles of the security outfit was stated as follows: "The operatives of the security outfit will assist police, other security agencies and traditional rulers in combating terrorism, banditry, armed robbery, kidnapping and also help in settling herdsmen and farmers contentions in the region."
Many had applauded the initiative taken by the governors of the 6 southwestern states to tackle issues insecurity in the region. However, something of a shocking development emerged today when one of the commanders of the security outfit disclosed that the outfit won't tolerate indecent dressing and improper language, causing many to liken them to Hisbah, a sister security outfit in the north which always engage in the arrests of citizens for 'crimes' such as indecent dressing and consumption of alcohol.
While reacting to the news, Senator Shehu Sani, a lawmaker who represented Kaduna Central Senatorial District during the 8th National Assembly condemned the move and wondered why the security outfit is leaving its original mandate, and instead extending it to the enforcement of decent dressing.
Taking to his verified Twitter account, the outspoken Senator wrote, "The very moment Amotekun extends their mandate beyond security issues to the enforcement of ‘decent dressing’,they have become Hisbatekun." See the tweet below:
You would recall that Amitolu Shittu, the Osun State commandant of the regional security network, Amotekun, disclosed that the outfit would not tolerate indecent dressing and what he termed the bastardising of Yoruba language by the youth when the security outfit finally begins it's full operation in March 2021.
Many Nigerians on Twitter condemned the move and many are of the opinions that they hope the security outfit won't turn out to be another Hisbah, with many also expressing concerns that they hope they won't regret supporting the establishment of the outfit. Many also called on Osun State Governor to call the security outfit to order.
