Zoning arrangement of political positions is being adopted by major political parties in Nigeria to ensure fairness and equity in the course of power distribution in the country. Considerably, zoning arrangement also assists to secure the unity of the country.
In the light of this, some politicians from Southern part of Nigeria are demanding for the power rotation of the presidency to be returned, amicably, to the section of the country.
Interestingly, depending on two strategic factors, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may be forced to look away from the agitation of the Southern politicians.
One, if the number of supporters of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continue to diminish in the Southern part of Nigeria, the party may decide to look away from the section and look toward the Northern part in their bid to pick the 2023 presidential candidate of the party.
It could be recalled that Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi, Senator Stella Oduah, former Aviation Minister Chief Femi Fani-Kayode and other prominent members of the opposition party have defected to the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC).
Most importantly, the recent defected Chief Femi Fani-Kayode is boosting that he is wooing about three other state governors from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC). This may cause drastic depression in the political influences of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southern part of the country.
Secondly, if the Southern members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continue with their mission to produce the next National Chairman of the party, it may definitely force the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to pick her presidential candidate from the Northern part of the country.
It is important to recall that one of the most prominent political principles in Nigerian politics is that, if the National Chairman of a political party emerges from the South, the presidential candidate of the party must emerge from the Northern part of the country. This political culture could be attributed to the agitation for fairness and equity, in the course of navigating the civilian governance in the country.
