When the issue of sharia law in Zamfara is being mentioned, Senator Ahmad Sani Yerima will always be mentioned as the first Governor in the northern Nigeria to implement Sharia law in the country and governed Zamfara State with it.
Yerima as he is fondly called was able to introduce sharia law during his administration as the executive Governor of Zamfara.
Yerima who was born Ahmad Rufai Sani Yerima on July 22, 1960 in Anka town, Zamfara State, was elected as the executive Governor of Zamfara State and was in office from May 29, 1999 to May 29 2007.
Senator Sanni Yerima became more popular in Nigeria politics when he introduced sharia law in Zamfara state on January 27, 2000. He then embraced Sharia Law fully in the state despite criticism from different quarters.
In his bid to make sharia law work in Zamfara State, Yerima made it clear that apostasy was not criminalised and gave an option to appeal all sentences in Nigeria's Federal Courts.
Yerima then established Sharia implementation bodies which include Council of Ulama, Hisbah Commission, Zakkat and Endowment Board, Sharia Research and Development Board, and also the Preaching Commission which contributed greatly to the success he recorded during his tenure while governing the state with Sharia.
Yerima recognized the multi-faith society nature of Nigeria as a country and allowed all the non-Muslims living in Zamfara State to make use of civil law anytime they have legal case in the state instead of Sharia law.
Yerima never infringed on the right of other faiths to preach, pray and build their places of worship in the state.
As part of the implementation of Sharia Law in the state, Yerima banned the sale and consumption of alcohol in Zamfara State. He also banned prostitution within the state.
After leaving office as the executive Governor of Zamfara State in 2007, Yerima subsequently served as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Zamfara West Senatorial District and was in office between June 2007 to June 2019.
Yerima has since then been a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. As the preparation for 2023 Presidential race continues, Yerima has already indicated interest and declared his intention to contest for 2023 Presidential race to takeover from President Buhari.
According to his statement which was quotes by Tribune Newspaper, Yerima stated that “By the grace of Allah, I will contest for president in 2023,” and then promised to create job, solve the problem of poverty and iinfrastructure if voted as the next president of Nigeria in 2023.
