Here Are Two Countries Celebrating Independence Today, Aside From Nigeria

Today, October 1, 2021, marked the 61st anniversary of Nigeria's Independence from Britain.

However, there are other countries that are also celebrating their independence today. They include:

1. Tuvalu

Tuvalu is a Pacific island republic in the Polynesian subregion of Oceania. Its islands are located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, almost halfway between Hawaii and Australia.

It is a small country with the population of less than 15,000 people. The currency of the country is the Tuvaluan Dollar, and it is predominantly a Christian state.

Tuvalu was granted independence by Britain on October 1, 1978. Like in Nigeria, English is the official language of the island.

2. Cyprus

Cyprus is a Mediterranean island nation in the east. It is located south of Turkey, west of Syria, northwest of Lebanon, Israel, and the Gaza Strip, north of Egypt, and southeast of Greece, and is the third biggest and third most populous island in the Mediterranean. Nicosia is the capital and largest city of Cyprus.

Cyprus' official languages are Greek and Turkish. It has a large percentage of Muslims and Christians. It has a population of about 2,000,000 people in 2018.

Cyprus gained independence from the United Kingdom on October 1, 1960, the same day as Nigeria.
