APC Wins All The 17 Local Government Areas In Plateau State

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won all the 17 chairmanship seats and the 325 councilors positions in the just concluded Local Government elections in Plateau state.

According to the Chairman of Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), Fabian Ntung, all the candidates under the APC have been declared winners.

This is not coming as a surprise to me because Plateau state is an APC state and the governor is a Bigwig in the party who would do anything for his candidates to win all elections.

If you observe how the election went in the state, one might just see it as a mere appointment and not an election.

The 17 Chairmen and Councillors should also note that it is not just becoming a councilor or local government chairman that is the problem? How about being compromised.

There are cases where a Chairman is supposed to receive N300 million. A document is given to the Chairman to sign that he/she has received N300 million but you are given only N100 million.

Many political observers believe that one of the factors that gave rise to this kind of scenario is the manner of choosing the local council chairmen and councilors.

Most times, many states truncate the tenure of the democratically elected council chairmen and councilors and replace them with members of the ruling political party in the state, as caretaker committees.

In some states, the government would decide not to conduct elections, preferring to run the councils with caretaker committees while in other states, elections are regularly conducted but the outcome always favors the ruling party in the state. This has resulted in growing voter apathy towards local council elections across the states
