Tinubu returns to Nigeria after three-month UK medical trip
The National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, returned to Nigeria on Friday after about three-month medical trip to the United Kingdom, where he underwent a knee surgery.
The former Lagos State governor arrived in Lagos barely 24 hours after the incumbent Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, inaugurated the South-West Agenda 2023 (SWAGA ‘23), a group rooting for Tinubu as the APC presidential candidate in the 2023 election.
Though Tinubu had yet to declare his intention to contest any office in 2023, there have been rumours and veiled indications that he might be interested in the exalted seat.
2022 budget: FG ignores Rivers, Lagos VAT row, targets N316bn
Despite ongoing legal tussle over which tier of government to collect Value Added Tax, the Federal Government has estimated N316.69bn as its share of VAT in 2022.
The sum is part of what the Federal Government plans to fund the 2022 Budget according to the details of the Appropriation Bill sighted by our correspondent on Friday.
The Federal High Court, Port Harcourt, had on August 10 ruled that states, and not the Federal Inland Revenue Service, had the legal rights to collect VAT and income tax. The FIRS has appealed the judgment.
Meanwhile, Rivers and Lagos State Governments have since signed laws authorising states to collect VAT.
Adeleke didn’t promise me private jet gift -Ooni
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has debunked the rumour that Senator Ademola Adeleke had promised him a private jet gift.
This is contained in a statement by the Director of Media and Public Affairs of the Ooni of Ife’s Palace, Moses Olafare, on Friday in Ile-Ife.
Olafare admonished the general public to disregard a viral report that stated that a gubernatorial aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ademola Adeleke, during a courtesy visit on Wednesday, promised to procure an aircraft for the Ooni.
He said that there was no such report issued from the palace despite the fact that the politician’s speech was twisted by some writers with hidden intentions, including to drag the respected stool of the Ooni in the mud.
Court sacks Kwara LGA transition committees, lambasts gov
A Kwara State High Court in Ilorin has sacked the Transitional Implementation Committee chairmen and members in the 16 local government areas of the state.
In a ruling on Friday, Justice Hassan Gegele, held that the suspension of democratically elected LGA chairmen and their replacement with an illegal TIC by the state government remained unknown to any law in the land.
The judge described the action of the state Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and his government as executive rascality and abuse of power.
He described the composition of TIC officials in the local government councils as illegal and unconstitutional.
