2 Things That Can Stop Ali Modu Sheriff From Becoming APC Chairman

Mr. Ali Modu Sheriff, a former Borno State governor, appears to really mean the business. He wants to become the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, but two specific things will stop the former governor from ascending the peak office in the political party. He may not even be considered let alone to be elected as the chairman.

The most important thing that the former governor is doing right now is to tour round and consult some top and recognised members of the party in across the country. He wants to clear the way and establish himself and his candidacy ahead of the national congress in which another chairman would be selected or picked.

When Mr. Ali Modu Sheriff visited the Yobe State governor in Damaturu some months ago, he said that he would love to lead the party. He said that he would contest for the office at the national APC secretariat if the party zones the slot to the whole northern region or specifically to the northeastern part of Nigeria.

Now the first thing that would stop him from winning the seat is that the party won't look at the side of the northeastern region at all. There is no indication that the party would recognise the presence of the zone because the party had done a lot for the northeastern part of the country.

The chairman of the APC caretaker committee, Mai Mala Buni, is from Yobe State which is a neighbour to Borno State. That means both Borno and Yobe belong to northeast geopolitical zone. Is it then possible for the All Progressives Congress to pick its chairman from the same zone again? Buni has spent more than a year in the office.

Apart from that, the APC picked the Senate President from northeast despite the fact that the party has control over only three states in the zone. Mr. Ahmed Lawan, the president of the Senate, is from northeast. Hence, the party won't consider northeast at all.

The second reason is that the leadership of the APC would be hesitant of electing Ali Modu Sheriff on the ground that he defected from the People's Democratic Party. The former Borno State governor was not just a member of the PDP when he was with the opposition party.

Ali Modu Sheriff led the PDP for some months and his leadership of the party was chaotic and full of controversies. Nigerians wouldn't forget the issue within the PDP at the time of Ahmed Makarfi and Ali Modu Sheriff. They both slugged it out in the PDP and caused more losses for the political party.

Even if the party doesn't consider thie factor, the APC would prefer a founding father to become the national chairman. And it is known that Ali Modu Sheriff only joined the party, he didnt participate in the formation of the party.
