Okeke dumped the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and joined the All Progressives Congress, APC, just few weeks ahead of the governorship election in the state. While this development left many people surprised, what is even more surprising is the manner APGA reacted to his defection. This article will discuss what APGA said in reaction to the Deputy Governor's defection and how this may work against APGA in the coming election.

What APGA said about his defection that may work against the party

In its official reaction to the Deputy Governor's defection, APGA publicly said that ''his defection is of no consequence''. APGA said this in a statement according to a report by Vanguard adding that Okeke's defection was not a surprise as the party had expected it happen since. APGA made other revelations while accusing the Deputy Governor of doing some things unexpected of him in the build up to his defection.

Well, the key comment APGA made here is that the defection of the Deputy Governor is of no consequence. Really? How can a success-minded political party make this comment publicly? It is normal for a party to try to play down the loss of a member through defection, but APGA truly went overboard. This is the same thing APGA has always done when other defected from the party. But, it surprised many people that APGA could publicly make this kind of comment after its Deputy Governor dumped the party for APC.

APGA needs to be reminded that it controls only Anambra State out of the whole 36 states in Nigeria. In view of this, losing the only Deputy Governor it has means a whole lot. It may be as good as losing half or a good fraction of a state. When a member of a party leaves especially an influential member, the person's vote, backing and the votes of his supporters have all been lost. Imagine what it means for a Deputy Governor to defect from the ruling party. It is of serious consequence because he left with his political allies and the many supporters. APGA will lose their votes.

It is also of great consequence because Okeke joined a strong rival party in the state ahead of the governorship election. Now, joining forces with APC against APGA may affect the chances of APGA from winning the election. He has political relevance. He knows APGA's plans and secrets which he can reveal to APC to use against APGA in the election.

Finally saying that the Deputy Governor's exit from APGA is of no consequence is daring him to d his worst. It may also make other politicians in APGA who are currently sitting on the fence to defect to prove APGA wrong since the party acts as if it is too sure of victory. Other voters watching may want to prove APGA wrong since the party seems to be acting too proud as if no key politicians matters to it. APGA should not have gone this far to play down the defection of the Deputy Governor because it may affect the party somehow ahead of the election.
