Information gathered indicates that the Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba was appointed on Acting capacity due to the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari. He was suppose to consult the Police Council before the appointment of the IGP.
The Minister of Police Affairs Mohammed Dangyadi stated during a television programm that the absence of the president stalled the confirmation of the IGP. This was twitted by the Nation Nigeria in it's Twitter handle " speaking with the Cable Television during a Politics program today monitored by The Nation's newspaper, Dangyadi stated that the absence of President Buhari stalled the process of consulting the Police Council"
Findings indicates that the Council comprises of the President, Governors of the 36 states of the Federation, Chairman of the Police Service Commission and the Inspector General of Police. The Council has to be duly consulted before the appointment of a new Inspector General of Police.
The CableNews also confirmed in it's Twitter handle that the president did not consult the Police Council before the appointment of the IGP. However, for not consulting the Police Council, the new Inspector General of Police might be on Acting capacity until the Council is consulted.
The new Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba was appointed on Acting capacity by the presidency few days ago to take over from former Inspector General of Police Mohammed Adamu who was by then at Imo State for official duty.
