For a while, many people had the impression that the zoning crisis that plagued the Peoples Democratic Party had been resolved following the ratification of the PDP zoning committee report and the subsequent adoption of Dr Iyiorcha Ayu as a consensus candidate.

But recent revelations indicate that calm is yet to fully be restored in the former ruling party as the zoning quagmire has cascaded into the geo-political zones. For example, it has emerged that the South-East wing of PDP is in crisis over the emergence of Senator Sam Anyanwu as a consensus candidate for the position of National Secretary of the PDP.

According to a report in Punch, prominent members of the South-East PDP wing including former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and Emeka Ihediaha have rejected Senator Anyanwu as a consensus candidate for the position of National PDP Secretary, alleging imposition.

Senator Sam Anyanwu was not a consensus candidate he was imposed by a south-south governor

According to a report in Punch, there was no consensus candidate in the real sense of the word “consensus”. It was an imposition that was orchestrated by an unnamed Governor from the South-South with the help of Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Governor Ugwuanyi just strolled into the venue of the meeting, which was held in Enugu, where other members of the South-East PDP caucus had already converged. Instead of conferring with the delegates of the different state chapters of the party, he just went ahead to announce Senator Anyanwu as the consensus candidate to the dismay and shock of the others.

This has created a huge crisis within the South East PDP members including Mr Peter Obi and Iheadioha who have vowed to reject the Anyanwu. They have also alleged that Anyanwu was the candidate of one South-South Governor.

The action of the Enugu State Governor has further worsened the internal crisis within the South East PDP and brings to fore the reasons why the region has failed in its bid to get the Presidency.

If the South-East leaders cannot agree on a less weighty matter such as a a consensus candidate for the position of PDP national Secretary, how can they agree when it comes to Igbo Presidency. This is one of the loopholes that the other regions have exploited to deny the South East the presidency for years.

Nobody knows the exact reason behind Ugwuanyi’s action but this will not be the best course of action at a time when South-East PDP needs all hands to be on deck in the interest of all Igbos.
