The first military coup in Nigeria took place in the year 1966 when a military officer who goes by the name Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu leader some soldiers to overthrow the government accusing them if incompetence. This took place on the 15th of January 1966.
However, this led to the death of many great men at that time including the prime minister of Nigeria and the premier of the western region. This coup saw the death of the premier of Northern region, sir Ahmadu Bello who was also the sarduna of Sokoto. This was not only the great man of Nigeria who died but also the prime minister Tafawa Balewa, he was the first Nigeria prime minister and highest person in power to die during a military coup.
