The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has said his regime remains committed to winning the war against terrorism and other forms of insecurity.

He noted that his regime would stop at nothing to ensure citizens had a new Nigeria free from insecurity before bowing out of office.

The president spoke at the unveiling of locally produced 700 Ashok Leyland troop-carrying vehicles in Abuja on Friday.

Buhari said, “As a country, we are proud since the first seven years; we have been able to revitalise our armed forces for the protection of Nigeria’s territorial integrity that was once violated by Boko Haram insurgency and other forms of criminality in the country.

“Let me also assure Nigerians, the Federal Government remains steadfast and committed to winning the war against insurgency and other forms of criminalities. We will not relent until we have a new Nigeria that is free from the terrorism menace.”

The Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi (retd), said the process of transforming the armed forces had been difficult because of the security and economic challenges confronting the nation.

He, however, said the vehicles would help improve the operational activities of the armed forces.

Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has branded the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, as a policy of confiscation, saying President Muhammadu Buhari was deceived.

Bello spoke during an interview on Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today, on Friday.

The governor said, “The policy is more or less a policy of confiscation, packaged so beautifully, but Mr. President was deceived.”

When asked to mention those who deceived Buhari, Bello simply said, “those that advised Mr. President economically misled Mr. President.”

This is coming less than a few hours after the Supreme Court, on Friday, nullified the ban on the use of the old N200, N500 and N1000 banknotes as legal tenders.

The Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision by a seven-member panel of Justices, held that the old banknotes should remain valid legal tenders until December 31.

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, on Friday said his administration had reduced the state’s dependence on the Federation Account Allocation Committee and enabled the state’s economy to continue to grow.

Makinde stated this during the inauguration of the 3.2km dual carriage Ibadan Airport Road named after a former governor of the state, Dr Omololu Olunloyo; and the 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility located within the Airport in Alakia.

The governor was joined by his Rivers State counterpart, Nyesom Wike, who inaugurated the Omololu Olunloyo Park, which would serve as a car park for transport services to and from the airport.

Wike, who described the projects as the Makinde-led administration’s infrastructure revolution, called on residents of the state to re-elect the Oyo governor for another term to enable him to continue to execute landmark projects in the state.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Taiwo Adisa, the aviation fuel facility, a public-private partnership project built by BOVAS Company Limited, was part of governor Makinde’s efforts to ensure the upgrade of the Ibadan Airport to an international facility and boost the economy of the state.

A Senior lawyer, Wahab Shittu (SAN) has said that anyone standing in the way of the implementation of the Supreme Court ruling on the extension of the validity of the old naira notes should be arrested and prosecuted.

In the early hours of Friday, the apex court extended the validity of the old notes on the grounds that the policy was implemented without due consultation. The apex court added that it was also not in line with constitutional provisions.

Consequently, the Supreme Court ruled that the old N200, N500 and N1,000, naira notes should co-exist with the new ones until December 31.

Shittu however said, “Once the Supreme Court sneezes, the country catches a cold. Once it makes a pronouncement, it takes immediate effect. The order of the Supreme Court does not require any other authority, including the Central Bank of Nigeria, before its directive should be complied with.

“Anyone standing in the way of the implementation of the Supreme Court order should be immediately arrested, charged for contempt and taken to prison.”
