Nyesom Wike did not just get to where he is today by just sitting down and hoping. He passed through a lot of stages before he eventually became the governor of Rivers State.
How did his political career start?
Governor Nyesom Wike began his political career as the executive Chairman of Obio Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers in 1999, a position he held until 2007, after being re-elected in 2003.
What happened next?
After Wike left his position as local government chairman, he was appointed as the chief of staff to Rotimi Amaechi in 2007. In July 2011, Nyesom Wike was appointed by Goodluck Jonathan as the minister of state for Education and was promoted to Federal Minister of Education in 2013.
Some months later, Nyesom Wike resigned from his position to campaign for governor of Rivers state.

In 2014, Nyesom Wike won the Rivers state People's Democratic Party primary, and in April 11, 2015, he won the Rivers state gubernatorial elections, defeating the likes of Dakuku Peterside (APC) and Tonye Princewill (Labour Party).
How Wike's election was nullified by Rivers state tribunal.
After the election, Dakuku asked the Rivers State election tribunal to nullify the election of Wike on the grounds that the exercise was fraught with malpractices and non compliance with the provisions of the Electoral act.

Unsatisfied with the decision of the Tribunal, Wike approached the Court of Appeal. But on December 15, 2015, Wike's appeal was dismissed by the court and the decision of the Tribunal was upheld.
Supreme Court victory for Wike.
Wike later proceeded to the Supreme Court to challenge the decision of the court of Appeal. Fortunately for him, in an unanimous decision, the Supreme Court which was presided over by Justice Mahmud Mohammed in January 2016, upheld his election in the April 11 Rivers state polls.
The 2019 Rivers state gubernatorial election.
On April 3, 2019, Nyesom Wike was declared the winner of the Rivers state gubernatorial elections. He took his oath of office on May 29, 2019 at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt as he commences his second term.
