Seven Top PDP Leaders Who Have Joined APC Ahead Of 2023 Poll

At least six top leaders of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) have found their ways into the All Progressives Congress (APC) as every politician is looking for ways to maintain their political influence and power. Things are changing gradually.

But it looks like the PDP is losing out to the APC in this current political dispensation. The opposition party doesn't appear to be firm and united as it looks forward to taking over power from the APC. The PDP has lost most of its key members to the APC, which has said that it would be in power for thirty two years.

Mr. Peter Nwaoboshi, a senator from Delta State has joined the APC. The federal lawmaker made his decision known shortly after crisis brewed in the Delta State chapter of the PDP. He was accused of anti-party activities. He was once the chairman of the PDP in Delta State and he won the seat at the House of Senate under the PDP, but he has now found his way out of the fold.

Mr. Nwaoboshi was initially suspended from the party on the ground that he was working against the PDP and Mr. Ifeanyi Okowa, the state governor. His suspension was made known through the publicity secretary of the party in Delta State. And after the suspension, Peter Nwaoboshi decamped to the APC.

Mr. Ben Ayade, the Cross Rivers State governor, had also become a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). His defection was one of the most shocking things to happen to the PDP. The party elevated him by providing opportunities for him to contest for the seat of the state governor twice. He was first elected as the Cross Rivers State governor in 2015 and was given the mandate to rule for the second time in 2019. Yet he left the party for the APC.

It must be noted that there was no crisis in the Cross Rivers State chapter of the PDP to make the governor decamp. Even he didn't give much clues for his defection, he simply just left the party. However, before he visited President Muhammadu Buhari, he said that he considered the style of leadership and virtue of the president before joining the APC.

Mr. Dave Umahi has also abandoned the PDP for the APC. The Ebonyi State Governor was also a leader of the PDP for several years before joining the APC. Even it could be said that he was one of the most favoured politician in Ebonyi State considering the fact that he was once a chairman of the party in the state and later the deputy governor.

Dave Umahi's defection was actually explained. He argued that the PDP didn't do much to ensure that the Igbo people taste presidency. The people of southeastern state have yet to produce a president for the country since the return to democracy.

The list won't be concluded without mentioning Senator Elisha Abbo from Adamawa State. The young senator left the PDP in 2020 and he didn't give specific reasons for his dumping of the party. And he embraced the All Progressives Congress (APC).

One surprising thing about his own defection is that the senator could have been stopped by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. The former vice president is one of the leaders of the PDP in the country and he was expected to ensure that the PDP is formidable in Adamawa State.

From the southwest geopolitical zone, all is not well for the PDP. Mr. Gbenga Daniel, who headed the campaign committee of the PDP at the national level in 2019, has also joined the APC. His defection was totally unprecedented and it projected a very pale future for the PDP.

Upon his own defection to the APC, he was led to the presidential villa by Mai Mala Buni, the chairman of the APC caretaker committee. Mr. Dimeji Bankole was also included in the meeting with the President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr. Yakubu Dogara can be regarded as a leader of the PDP till August, 2020. He left the PDP after he had used the platform to return to the House of Representatives. It was the PDP that enabled him to be reelected. When he was in the APC, he became the speaker of the House, but he had issues with the party leaders and he left before the end of his tenure.

And while rejoining the APC in August, 2020, Mr. Dogara revealed that issues which made him decamp from the APC to the PDP had been resolved. And Mai Mala Buni took him to have a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the presidential villa.

Mr. Bello Matawalle, the Zamfara State governor, has also found his way into the APC. It was initially speculated that the governor would leave the PDP and join the APC. He didn't pass any comment on it till Tuesday.

The Premium Times said that he officially joined the APC in an held at the Gusau Trade Fair Complex. Several ministers, APC governors and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha were in attendance and they warmly and officially welcomed Bello Matawalle into the APC.
