Amid a flurry of public endorsements from clerics and clergymen for the frontrunners in the race for the office of the president, veteran journalist, and public affairs analyst, Jimi Disu has come out to give reasons why he thinks the refusal by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to endorse any of the candidates ahead of Saturday's election is the right move.
According to a report by The VANGUARD on Thursday, the leadership of the CAN has maintained its stance on not endorsing any of the presidential candidates, insisting that it would rather remain non-partisan while praying for a smooth election and subsequent transition of governments in the country.
Reacting to the statement during an interview on Nigeria Info FM a few hours ago, Disu expressed his pleasure at the stance taken by the country's leading Christian body on not being lured into endorsing any candidate for the presidency, describing the decision as a noble one.
"I think it is a noble thing that CAN has done. I am glad that they resisted the temptation to endorse a candidate. It is very untidy when such things happen. Yesterday, we had to contend with some Obas in the Southwest endorsing the candidate of the APC. See, in all the things that we do, if we find ourselves in a position of privilege, the number one thing we must have at the back of our mind should be how to unite this country. And what we must remember is that every individual in this country, no matter where he is from, we all have equal rights and share in this enterprise called Nigeria.
All this talk of it is our turn is not right. In any case, I am glad the Obas didn't say it is the turn of the Yorubas because if you are to go by that, it isn't. What we should be looking for is progress, unity, and a better life for our citizens. So, I am happy that the Christian Association of Nigeria has refused to endorse any candidate. That a man is a Christian does not guarantee that he will do a better job than one who is a Muslim. It doesn't work that way."
