Nigeria, the largest black nation in the world has been having unity problem since after independence which one time led to a deadly civil war which took place in 1967 to 1970 spanning through 30 months.
A part of the country has been agitating to cede and have an independent State called Biafra.
The fight for the independent State of Biafra started as early as in 1960s and was headed by the then Governor General of Eastern region, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
Today, the agitation is still ongoing with Mazi Nnamdi Kanu the current leader. He is calling on for separation under the movement of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.
In as much as they want to cede, the fact is Nigeria unity is the best for Igbos, Hausas, Yorubas, Ijaws, Fulanis and all other tribes in the country. The unity of Nigeria, to all geopolitical zones in the country, is sacrosanct.
Nigeria needs to be united now than ever for many reasons. Below are some strong reasons why Biafra should stop the agitation and embrace one Nigeria;
1. Diverse Economy.
Did you know that the economy of a country is always at risk if it is dependent on only one thing? Yes because once the market of the country's economy falls, the country may go into recession.
But the story will be different for Nigeria in the nearest future because the economy is diverse. The north has agriculture and solid minerals, the west has agriculture and oil (in Ondo State), the east has oil and solid minerals (especially coal in Enugu State) why the south has the greatest concentration of oil in the country. So in future as a united Nigeria, if the price of oil falls, agriculture and solid minerals will complement and vice versa. This is a very good reason why the country should not breakup.
2. Ethnic Diversity.
One important reason why Biafra should stop agitating for Biafra is because Nigeria's ethnic diversity will make the country formidable to attack by enemy nations. It is also of great value to Nigeria as the tourism industry will receive major boost because many people are eager to come and know the united country with over 250 ethnic groups with the majors being Hausas, Yorubas and Igbos.
3. The Population.
If you check most of the highly developed countries, you will discover that they have a large population. This means man power is as important to the economy as natural resources. If the population growth is less than the economy growth, underpopulation occurs which will have effect on the economy. Large population is also important when it comes to defense as there will be enough man power in the military.
If Nigeria divides, the population of each new independent States will decrease significantly leading to population problem.
4. Land Mass.
Also if you take a look at most developed nations, you will notice that they have significant landmass. This will create room for more developmental projects; especially in infrastructural development. There will also be lands available to build industries, national parks, and so on.
If Nigeria divides, each new country may have land mass problem. Note that this is why some nations go through the stress if sand filling water bodies to create enough land.
So with the above points, it's clear that the unity of Nigeria is what we all need irrespective of tribe, State , geopolitical zones, e.t.c. Thank you for reading.
